The festival season is well under way now with the start of Glastonbury and no doubt many of us will be excitedly heading off somewhere for a fun weekend. And we bet that nearly everyone will be recording the events on their smartphones in order to create lasting memories.
The trouble is that phones are so easily lost and that feeling of dread when you realise yours is missing can ruin everything. So here at MEEM we have put together a few tips to help you keep your phone – and your memories – safe.
Do you really need to take your best phone?
By this we mean – your smartphone will no doubt have cost quite a bit and will probably contain important emails, contacts, videos and numbers. In short, losing this would be devastating. Why not buy a cheap pay-as-you-go phone just for festivals? Even the most basic of these have decent cameras on; you can always edit and enhance your photo memories on your other device when you get back home. Remember to put important contact numbers in it and you’re good to go. And while it is true that some cheaper phones may not have internet access what does that matter? You’re there to have fun with friends, soak up the atmosphere and make new memories!
If you do decide to take your smartphone…
We understand that some people can’t possibly live without their favourite smartphone buddy so if you must take yours with you there are things you can do to keep it safe.
- Put a secure lock code on your phone so that if someone does get their hands on it they won’t be able to use it. Go into the phone settings to do this and make sure you think of something easy to remember but not obvious. (Avoid 1234!)
- Write down your phone’s IMEI number so you can identify your phone should it be lost or stolen. Keep this with you at all times.
- If there is a secure ‘left luggage’ type compound, store your phone and other valuables while at the festival.
- Be extra careful. When carrying the phone around place it in a zipped compartment or pocket. Be aware always of where it is and don’t be tempted to show it off too much. Thieves are always watching!
You’ll no doubt be keeping your internet off to conserve battery so cloud backup may be off the agenda. In which case, if you are taking your phone for charging at the charge bank, take MEEM with you to backup your memories at the same time and then get back to the fun. Keep it stored separately to your phone and you’ll always have a spare hard copy. And of course, back everything up before you leave for the festival!
